Tech News: 2023-44[edit]
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The Structured Content team, as part of its project of improving UploadWizard on Commons, made some UX improvements to the upload step of choosing own vs not own work (T347590), as well as to the licensing step for own work (T347756).
- The Design Systems team has released version 1.0.0 of Codex, the new design system for Wikimedia. See the full announcement about the release of Codex 1.0.0.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 31 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 November. It will be on all wikis from 2 November (calendar).
- Listings on category pages are sorted on each wiki for that language using a library. For a brief period on 2 November, changes to categories will not be sorted correctly for many languages. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the library. They will then use a script to fix the existing categories. This will take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [1][2]
- Starting November 1, the impact module (Special:Impact) will be upgraded by the Growth team. The new impact module shows newcomers more data regarding their impact on the wiki. It was tested by a few wikis during the last few months. [3]
Future changes
- There is a proposed plan for re-enabling the Graph Extension. You can help by reviewing this proposal and sharing what you think about it.
- The WMF is working on making it possible for administrators to edit MediaWiki configuration directly. This is similar to previous work on Special:EditGrowthConfig. A technical RfC is running until November 08, where you can provide feedback.

Recent changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, the default font-size of a number of navigational elements (tagline, tools menu, navigational links, and more) has been increased slightly to match the font size used in page content. [4]
Problems
- Last week, there was a problem displaying some recent edits on a few wikis, for 1-6 hours. The edits were saved but not immediately shown. This was due to a database problem. [5]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 November. It will be on all wikis from 9 November (calendar).
- The Growth team will reassign newcomers from former mentors to the currently active mentors. They have also changed the notification language to be more user-friendly. [6][7]

Good evening Aristeas,[edit]
If I may, just a question. My set of mushrooms promoted at FP: Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/Ruitjesbovist (Calvatia utriformis). 07/18/2023. (d.j.b) 03.jpg Not listed among the gems on the main page. Or is that not common with a set? Yours sincerely,--Famberhorst (talk) 17:41, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Famberhorst, I will look into this today. I will answer you. Have a nice day, --Aristeas (talk) 09:30, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Hi Famberhorst and Aristeas! I know from experience that there is something strange going on with the code only(!) at the 'Fungi' section of that page. This is making the FPCBot sometimes miss adding new FPs to that section. I've been trying for a year or so to figure out what is wrong, but so far no luck. The two new FPs are now added manually ([8]). Perhaps Aristeas can figure out what the problem is, some day...
- While I was there, I also saw that another user had just added a non-FP to that section. Now reverted and the user notified. Best --Cart (talk) 14:40, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Cart, thank you so much for taking care of this! I have been held up by other duties. Now I wanted to look into this, finally, but it’s great that you have already resolved the issue. Yes, the mysterious question why the bot does not update that section … I remember that some months ago I already investigated a bit into that, but I found no trace of an answer. But sooner or later I must dig deeper to find, hopefully, a fix for this. Until that we are thrown back on manual fixes. Thank you again and all the best, also for removing the fake FP! --Aristeas (talk) 15:38, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- I know that 'Fungi' was once part of the 'Plants' section, and I think the trouble started when it was made into a new section of its own. Not sure if this can give you any leads, but I thought I would mention it. With all the tranclusions and translation templates on that page, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. ;-( --Cart (talk) 15:46, 14 November 2023 (UTC) --Cart (talk) 15:46, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, very probably the bug must be related to that origin of the section. That’s an important starting point, thank you! And the translations make things much more complicated, alas … --Aristeas (talk) 15:57, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Good evening W.carter and Aristeas, Thank you very much for your efforts. It has been resolved nicely again. Kind regards from and turbulent Friesland,--Famberhorst (talk) 16:16, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Four new wikis have been created:
Problems
- Last week, users who previously visited Meta-Wiki or Wikimedia Commons and then became logged out on those wikis could not log in again. The problem is now resolved. [13]
- Last week, some pop-up dialogs and menus were shown with the wrong font size. The problem is now resolved. [14]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 November. It will be on all wikis from 16 November (calendar).
Future changes
- Reference Previews are coming to many wikis as a default feature. They are popups for references, similar to the PagePreviews feature. You can opt out of seeing them. If you are using the gadgets Reference Tooltips or Navigation Popups, you won’t see Reference Previews. Deployment is planned for November 22, 2023.
- Canary (also known as heartbeat) events will be produced into Wikimedia event streams from December 11. Streams users are advised to filter out these events, by discarding all events where
meta.domain == "canary"
. Updates to Pywikibot or wikimedia-streams will discard these events by default. [15]

Good news[edit]
Just came by to tell you that while I added the new gallery pages to the Commons:Featured pictures, list, I noticed that some things were "off" with the coding. Fixing that, it looks like I solved the trouble with the 'Fungi' section. I guess after all the coding lately, I was in the right mood and more recepive to very minor glitches. Fingers crossed it works now! --Cart (talk) 22:45, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Cart, these are really great news! Thank you very much! So after all it was not a special bug in FPCBot, but just some hidden error in the (very special and complicated) coding of that page. Do you happen to know which change exactly did the trick, I guess this one? I just ask in order to understand better what kind of coding errors caused the bot’s misbehaviour ... in order to know better (in the future) what to look for if this problems reappears. Thank you again and all the best, --Aristeas (talk) 15:46, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, that edit did the trick. I saw that the bug happened because of a compilated series of wonky edits by several users over time (me included). I tried several ways to fix it, but trying to undo past not-so-good-edits only made things worse. This seemed to be the best way to solve the problem.
- Keeping those numbers correct and corresponding with each other is the way to keep that pager running. I actually got the clue for this while I got in trouble with the translate tags, and was helped, at the gallery template. So that mess helped solve this bug. :-)
- Right now I'm working on sorting out black and white photos. Now that the B&W gallery is back as a working photo technique, it needs to be cleaned up, sorted and integrated into the normal gallery system. I will be working on this the rest of the day now. --Cart (talk) 15:58, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Very good, Cart. OK, so we must remember to double-check these numbers on any changes. It’s difficult, but at least it’s an understandable reason. Thank you very much also for taking care of the B&W gallery! Yes, if we keep them (and now we have finally good reasons to kepp it) we must maintain it, also in the long run. I will try to remember to have an eye especially on the B&W and the other new “technique” gallery pages. --Aristeas (talk) 16:14, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- An important question, Cart. Do we continue to handle the B&W as a “secondary” gallery, i.e. that any FP which is listed on that page should be also listed on a topical gallery page? Or do we abandon this and apply our “No duplicates” rule also to the B&W gallery page, meaning that if a photo is listed there, it must not be listed on any other FP gallery page? Right now we have a mix – e.g. File:Windows of the Frost Building (Toronto, Canada) in monochrome.jpg is listed on three gallery pages, but your File:Nine steps stair in Lysekil - bw.jpg is listed only on the B&W gallery page, not in the Architectural elements#Stairs gallery. I am fine with both approaches, but we should settle for one of them. This is also important in order to keep my fpgallerist' program up to date – it needs to know if photos listed on the B&W gallery page are allowed to or even must (as previously) appear also on a topical gallery page. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 16:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- I'm working on getting it re-made as a normal primary gallery, with no duplicates. I have just started to sort things, so there are still a lot of doubles out there and things look a bit messy right now. I hope this will clear up by tomorrow if I work hard. You did the check right in the middle of my work. :-) Having the B&Ws getting a "special treatment" is not in line with the usual policies on the galleries. When it comes down to it, B&W is just another way of taking photos, just like ICM or Filters. So, sorry, but you will have to update your program. Hopefully things will look clearer tomorrow. There are a lot of files to sort through. --Cart (talk) 16:36, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Cart, don’t hurry, I absolutely did not want to put pressure on you – I just wanted to discuss the question! Take any time you want. Updating my program is no problem. On the contrary, I can even simplify the code now because the B&W gallery is no longer an exception which needs special treatment! So I am really happy about this change. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 17:05, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- You both are amazing and wonderful people! Thanks for all the work you do to keep the pictures of others shining! Aristeas, you've got mail, all is well. Kritzolina (talk) 18:20, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Like always when you set out to fix something on Commons, you step into unforeseen messes and the the whole thing ends up taking much, much more time than you thought. This time it's all those restored old black and white photos. They are scattered all over the place! Tracking them down and sorting them is taking forever. They are really clogging what I thought would be a smooth and easy way to give the B&W it's place. Anyway, a new gallery page had to be created, Commons:Featured pictures/Historical/People, and some instruction and info set up on other pages. I have added it to the FP list and the template, but the transclusion to the rest of the pages is a bit slow right now, so I isn't visible there yet. I also had to fix some new top links for croos-gallery navigating, and I improved the code on some of the to work better with multi platform interfaces. Back to work! --Cart (talk) 09:45, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- I am doing some sorting, I hope I am doing it correctly. If not, please let me know! Kritzolina (talk) 10:46, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Kritzolina, thank you for your help. It is almost right. You have to include the year on every image as well, like this
'''1855'''<br />
, and be sure to place them in chronological order within the sections too. Could you please fix that for the photos you have already sorted? The work is unfortunately very tedious... ;-) --Cart (talk) 12:37, 22 November 2023 (UTC)- I will, thanks for letting me know Kritzolina (talk) 13:00, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- As an afterthought - have you any advice on how to deal with those pictures that are only loosly dated? Like 1885 or 1886, or between 1860 and 1865. This was easy, when just sorting them into a span of years, but for sorting chronologically, this is an issue. Kritzolina (talk) 13:49, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Kritzolina Yep, I had the same problem, so I looked at how it has been done earlier on the usual 'History' gallery. You sort the image by the first year and place it after those with just a single year. Like this: 1885, 1885, 1885, 1885 or 1886, 1885-95, 1886, 1886, 1886 or 1888. --Cart (talk) 14:16, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, working on it ... but need to do some other things as well in RL, so I will take a break and continue later. Kritzolina (talk) 14:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
